Lawyers use language with particular care and need to be certain that a language course will enable them to communicate accurately and that they will understand precisely what they read and hear.
Our trainers are specialist English language trainers with particular expertise in the law. There is important input from the legal world: sessions led by practising lawyers provide an authentic and practical contribution and the participants usually also visit a law firm and the courts.
Legal English: Commercial Lawyers
Helping commercial lawyers to work effectively in an international setting. This course is for qualified, experienced lawyers from law firms or the corporate sector who have a reasonably confident command of English.
Legal English: Public Sector Lawyers
This is a highly specialised programme designed for lawyers working in the state or public sector, either in central government departments, ministries and authorities, or for regional or local government.
This three-week course is for newly qualified lawyers and law students to give them the specialised language skills they will need for their careers. The content is varied and includes input from practising lawyers, visits to law firms and to the courts when in session to ensure that participants experience the language in action.
TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills)
This course is designed to prepare candidates for the TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills) examination. It is available as an optional 4th week after the 3-week Young Lawyers course.
ILEC (International Legal English Certificate)
This 3-week course is designed to prepare candidates for the ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) examination, which is offered by Cambridge ESOL. The course is recognised by several international law associations.

This certificate provides what law firms around the world have long requested – an internationally-accredited test of spoken and written English for lawyers and students of law whose first language is not English. ILEC is already acquiring a status similar to that of other internationally-important Cambridge ESOL examinations such as FCE and CPE.
Students wishing to prepare for ILEC can follow a course leading up to the ILEC examination. Preparation at The Cambridge Academy of English has two main goals:
1. Development of the student’s general English skills to the level required to pass ILEC
The level of general English required to pass ILEC is high (Common European Framework level C1) and clients preparing for the exam will therefore be helped to develop the same level of general English language as is needed for the Cambridge Advanced Certificate or Certificate of Proficiency in English.
Students sitting the ILEC examination will benefit from working on a broad range of skills: oral fluency, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing.(15 hours per week – morning classes)
2. Preparation of the student in the specific language of legal English.
This is divided into three main areas:
The preparation will include topics such as: different types of lawyer and court, lawyering skills, competition law, employment law, European Law, intellectual property and administrative law. Students will also be introduced to all parts of the ILEC exam and be given exam practice tasks.
(10 hours per week – afternoon classes)
